Norden Cousins Gather

The Norden family reunion was held at Rock Springs 4-H Camp near Junction City from Thanksgiving until Sunday, Nov. 28. Members of the family brought food to celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday evening. The other meals were catered by the Camp. Linda and John Scheer of Leavenworth hosted the event.

Others in attendance were Tim, Christine, Bailee and Olivia Scheer of Lawrence; Mike, Katie, Carter and Annabelle Goodpasture of Kansas City; Crystal Bretton and David, Janelle and McKenzie Grau of Colorado Springs; Ed and Janice Norden and Matt and Cassie Norden of Canon City, Colo; Scott, Mindy and Madison McDowell of Denver; Luke and Amy Norden of Mitchell, S.D.; Bob and Donna Westbrook, B.J., Melissa, Morgan and Maycee Westbrook and Darrell, Elaine and Justin Bretton, all of Kensington. Maycee Westbrook's 8th birthday was also celebrated. Shirley Grauerholz and her family were unable to join the group this year.

After a 4 year battle with cancer, our Mom, Sharon Kay Timmer was received by the loving arms of our Lord and Savior on Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010. Sharon was born in Kensington, KS on May 7, 1944 and was baptized and confirmed at the St. John Lutheran Church also in Kensington, KS. In 1997 she made her home in Georgia and became an active member of First United Lutheran Church in Kennesaw, GA. Survivors include, her twins, son, Shane Beardslee and wife Pam of Omaha, NE and daughter, Shawn Cunlisk and husband Troy of Vancouver, WA, her three granddaughters; Ashley Cunlisk, Sam Beardslee, and Addison Beardslee. She is also survived by her three sisters, Gloria Sink and husband Steve of Salina, KS, Nancy Wangerin and husband Dave of Agra, KS, and Marcia Suchsland and husband Larry of Smith Center, KS. She is also survived by many friends and close family members. She was preceded in death by her parents Wayne and Annetta Herndon. Obituary for Mrs. Gustav (Iola) Oestmann
Iola Mary Louise Plager was born June 9, 1911 to August and Hannah (Sodman) Plager on a farm in rural Humboldt, NE. of Long Branch community in Nemaha County. She was one of three children.
Iola was baptized July 2, 1911 and confirmed November 29, 1925 by Rev. E.F. Geyer at the St. James Lutheran Church, rural Humboldt. She received her education through the eigh grade at the Greenfield School, District #62.
Iola was united in marriage to Gustav Oestmann on June 1, 1932 at St. James Lutheran Church by Rev. William Fruehling. Three daughters were born to this marriage. They farmed southwest of Johnson, Nebraska until 1962 when they sold the farm and their cattle and moved to Auburn, Nebraska. There Gus and Iola worked for the Auburn Public Wchool until retirement in 1974.
They were members of Martin Luther Lutheran Church all of their married life. Iola was active with the church women, alter guild, quilting ladies and the Nemaha County Hospital Auziliary. Iola likde homemaking and baked many wedding cakes. She enjoyed sewing for the family and was assistant 4-H leader while the girls were in 4-H.
She lived all of her life in Nemaha County with the exception of 22 months which she resided in the Maple Grove Home at rural Tecumseh, Nebraksa. January 14, 1998 she was admitted to the Good Samaritan Center in Auburn where she died on July 11, 1998 having reached the age of 87 years, one month and two days. She was preceded in death by her parents. her husband Gustav who died March 30, 1981 and one sister LaOra Meyer.
Surviving are her three daughters, Marlene Ritter and her husband Ronald of Fort Collins, Colorado, Angela Holthus and her husband Alvin of Johnson, Nebraska and Veld Koehler and her husband William of Tecumseh; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, one great great-granddaughter; one sister, Evelybn A. Anderson of Fort Collins, Colorado, sister-in-law, Alma Conradt of Tecumseh, other relatives and many friends.
Services held at Martin Luther Lutheran Church, Johnson, Nebraska on Wednesday, July 15, 1998 10:00 a.m.
Clery was Pastor Amy Krejcarek.
Interment was in the Martin Luther Cemetery.

HOLTON --- Deloris Segenhagen, 84, Holton, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at Holton Community Hospital.

She was born Sept. 11, 1918, in Filmore, Mo., the daughter of Ervin and Neva Lance Johnson. She moved to Holton from the Whiting area in 1937.

Mrs. Segenhagen was a homemaker and operated a dairy farm with her husband for many years. She was a long time 4-H leader, a member of CO-OP and a member of the Kansas Dairy Council.

She married Wilmer Fred Segenhagen on Jan. 30, 1937, in Holton. He died Sept. 19, 1974. She also was preceded her in death by two sisters and four brothers .

Survivors include a son, Jerry Segenhagen, Holton; a daughter, Deloris "Jean" Anschutz, Topeka; two sisters, Maxine Lund, Holton, and Madella Schreiber, Soldier; a brother, Ernest Johnson, Topeka; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will be in Holton Cemetery. Mrs. Segenhagen will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home, where visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Memorials may be given to the Holton Community Hospital.

Married Oct. 16, 1947 to Katharine Bartels at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Elk Creek, Pawnee, NE. In 1948 moved to a farm northwest of Cook, NE. there they lived rest of married life.
They had 5 children. Donald, David, Delwin, Sam, and Linda Gapp. 10 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren. a brother Norman and a sister Helen.
Funeral services were held at the Grace Lutheran Church in Cook, NE. on Nov. 19, 2003.

He married Sept. 25, 1941 to Zola Kuhlmann at St. James (Long Branch)Lutheran Church rural Humboldt, Nemaha, NE. After marriage they moved to his Granfather Eggers place. where they raised their 2 sons and a daughter. The couple lived there for 38 years until they moved to Johnson, NE. in 1980. Herman was a lifelong farmer. but also a accomplished carpenter and plumber.
He was a livelong member of Martin Luther Church.
He died at the Belle Terrace Rest Home in Tecumseh, NE. at the age of 89 years, 3 months and 28 days. He was preceded in death by his parent and grandson, Alan Antholz.
Surviving are his wife Zola, sons, Clintona nd wife Cecilia, Richard and daughter Phyllis Davis and husband Bruce. 6 grandchildren, three step grandchildren, four great grandchilden, 5 step great grandchildren. sister Helen Gerdes, brothers Albert and wife Katherine, Norman and wife Wilma.

Norman was the yougest of four childrenof Martin Herman and Lydia (Eggers) Antholz. born in rural Nemaha County, Ne. He was baptized April 29, 1927 and confirmed Nov. 30, 1941 at Martin Luther Church near Johnson, NE.
Norman enlisted in the United States Army on April 10, 1946 served Guam during his service. and honorabley discharged on Oct. 13, 1947. He then returned to Nemaha county, NE.
On Jan. 12, 1950 he married Wilma Kuhl at St.John's Lutheran Church in Tecumseh, NE. to this union was blessed with four children, Diane, Keith, Duane, and Nancy.
Norman was a farmer and a member of Zion Lutheran Church near Johnson, NE.
He died at the Nemaha County Good Samaritan Center in Auburn, NE. at the age of 76 years, 9 months and 29 days.
He was preceded in death by parents, brothers Herman and Albert and brothers-in-law Irvin Gerdes and Vernon Kuhl.

Marcia M. Bielby, 75, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and educator died 6 July 2009 after a valiant battle with cancer. Funeral services were held 10 July 2009 at the United Methodist Church on the corner of 15th and Clark Street in Pocatello with Pastor Craig Strovel officiating. Graveside services were held 11 July 2009 in Salmon. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilks Funeral Home. She was born in Salmon, Idaho on 18 March 1934, to Johnie and Mae Gutzman. She attended schools in Salmon, graduating as saluatorian from Salmon High School in 1952. She attended Idaho State College for two years then married her childhood sweetheart, Victor C. Bielby, on 25 October 1954, in Fayetteville, North Carolina where he was stationed in the army. Upon returning from the service her husband accepted a position with the Federal Bureau of Public Roads which gave them the opportunity to live and work in many localities in the state of Idaho, including Boise, Salmon, St. Maries, Stanley, Crouch, and Island Park, with each place adding lifelong friendships. During these years, they were blessed with two children, John in 1956 and Vicki in 1959. When the family moved back to Pocatello in 1966, she continued her education at Idaho State University where she earned her Bachelor of Arts, Masters and Education Specialist degrees. She taught at Hawthorne and Bonneville Elementary Schools and served as principal of Tendoy and Chubbuck Elementary Schools. She earned the respect and admiration of her peers. She received the prestigious "Gem Award" by the Idaho Association of Elementary School Principals along with recognition from many for her contribution to excellence in education. She loved her school, her teachers and her students. She is survived by her husband, Victor C. Bielby; her son, John (Lauri) Bielby of Florence, Montana; her daughter, Vicki (Claudio) Avila of Pocatello; three grandchildren, Amanda (Mark) Sommers, Andy Avila, Matt Avila; one great-granddaughter, Olivia; her sister, Shirley ( Jerrold) Booher of Pocatello. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnie and Mae Gutzman. The family appreciates all friends and relatives who have been such a support to Marcia through her difficult time, especially Access Hospice, specifically Niki, her hurse and Amee, her aide, who became such wonderful friends and support.

Death of Wayne Herndon

Wayne Herndon, 86, Red Cloud, Neb., died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007. He was the rural mail carrier out of Bellaire before his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Annetta, and a grandson.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor of Red Cloud; four daughters, Sharon Timmer of Smyrna, Ga. Gloria Sink of Salina, Nancy Wangerin of Agra, and Marcia Suchsland of Smith Center; a step-son, Rodney Stueck of Red Cloud; a step-daughter, Linda Hendricks of Moberly, Mo.; two brothers, Clyde of Seaview, Wash. and Norval of Lebanon; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was Wednesday afternoon at St. John Lutheran Church of Kensington. Burial was in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery.

Esther E. Merklein

Esther Elizabeth (Beckman) Merklein, eldest child of Arthur J. and Margaret C. (Fritsch) Beckman, was born on the farm southwest of Phillipsburg, Kansas on October 24. 1911. She passed away September 24, 2006 at Phillips County Hospital Long Term Care in Phillipsburg at the age of 94.

She received Holy Baptism in the family home on November 21, 1911 by Pastor Schulz, and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith June 27, 1926 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Belmont Township, with Isaiah 53:5 as her confirmation Bible verse.

Esther attended and graduated from the Silver Light rural school, and then graduated from Speed High School with the class of 1929. The following year she took a post graduate course of Normal Training at the Phillipsburg High School. For ten years she taught in local rural schools, and then served as a social worker in the Phillips County Welfare office for six years.

On November 7, 1945, she was united in marriage to Carl Merklein in the Zion Lutheran Church. To this union was born one son, John Paul Arthur, who died shortly after birth.

The couple lived on the Merklein farm southwest of Stuttgart, Kansas, where they opened their home and their hearts to Jeanette Moore, who stayed with them during her high school years. They also cared for Carl's mother until her health failed, and she passed away in 1966. Pauline, John T. and Mary Kathleen Merklein spent many days of their childhood on the farm with Carl, Esther and Grandma.

Esther was a loyal and faithful member of her church, and taught many years of Sunday School and Bible School at both Zion and Emmanuel Lutheran Churches. In 2001, when her health began to fail, she entered Phillips County Hospital Long Term Care.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Carl, and her infant son.

Merklein

Carl George Michael Merklein, son of Karl and Margaretha Miller Merklein was born on a farm south of Stuttgart, Kans., March 9, 1912, and departed this life at the St. Anthony Hospital, Hays, Kans., Nov. 21, 1978, having attained the age of 66 years, eight months and 12 days.

Carl was baptized into the Christian faith on April 5, 1912, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Stuttgart, Kans., and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on July 5, 1925, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Stuttgart. He was a life-long member of the Emmanuel Lutheran congregation.

Carl Lived [sic] on the farm where he was born and enjoyed farming and farm life. Failing health caused his retirement a few years ago, but his interest in farm life remained.

On Nov. 7, 1945, Carl was united in marriage with Esther Beckman at the Zion Lutheran Church, rural Phillipsburg, Kans. To this union one son, John Paul Arthur was born, but died shortly after birth.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, his infant son, two brothers and one sister.

Memorial services were held at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Stuttgart, Saturday, Nov. 25, 1978, with Pastor Duane Levin officiating. Hymns were sung by Norman Merklein and Alvin Veeh and by the congregation with Mrs. Marene Levin as organist.

Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg, to await the resurrection.

Erich H. Beckman, 89, former Beckman's Body Works owner, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Sumner Regional Medical Center, Wellington, Kan. Service 10:30 a.m. Friday, Zion Luthern Church, Argonia, interment in Conway Springs Cemetery.
Mr. Beckman was born Sept. 2, 1913 in Phillips County, Kan. He was united in marriage to Betty G. Miles on April 6, 1936 at Wichita, Kan. She preceded him in death on Aug. 22, 1968. He was a long-time Conway Springs resident and a former Wichita resident.
Erich worked in body repair for Quality Chevrolet in Wichita in the 1950's He later owned and operated Beckman's Body Works in Conway Springs retiring in 1979.
Erich married Rozella Mercer in 1972. She also preceded him in death on June 7, 1975.
Survivors: son and daughter-in-law, Rudy and Lynn Beckman of Wichita; daughter and son-in-law, Maurine and Wayne Taylor of Conway Springs; brother Edmond Beckman of Denver, Colo.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. OSAGE, IOWA — Mrs. Mathilda Gemaehlich, 90, died Monday at a rest home in Medford, Oregon.

Funeral services are tentatively set for Friday at the Lutheran Church in Medford. A former Mitchell County resident, Mrs. Gemaehlich leaves 109 direct descendants.

Mrs. Gemaehlich was the widow of the Rev. Johannes Gemaehlich, who was pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Mitchell County from 1920 to 1927. He died in 1947.

Surviving are eight children: Andrew, Rudolph and Mrs. Ralph Lorenz, all of Osage; Simon, Sanger, Texas; Emil, Clinton, Okla.; John and Mrs. Ed Rupp, Medford; Berthold, Tujunga, Calif.; 33 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Caroline Schardt, Templeton, Tex., and Mrs. Emelia
Gemaehlich, Kensington, Kansas.

Irvin R. Schleip of Tecumseh, NE. died Nov.7, 1986 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, NE. at age 76.
Ervin was born July 15, 1910 at Schuyler, NE. the son of Julius and Emilie Backmeyer Schleip.
He was married Selma C. Beckmann at Auburn on July 23, 1936. They lived in S.E. Nebraska. 3 children were born to their marriage. Schleip worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and was a life long member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
Ervin was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Emilie in 1973.
Surviving are his 2 sons, Robert D. of Kenosha, WI. and David L. Schleip of Tempe, AZ. and a daughter Mrs. Allister Behrens of Tecumseh, NE.by 4 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren and 10 step great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Nov. 10 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Tecumseh by Rev. Norman Schaeffer.
Pallbearers were Russell Behrends, Kurt Behrends,(Dick) Wolff, and Donald Thompson, Ronald Rathe, Mike Shaffer,
Mrs. Gary Bauers was organist.
Burial was in Trinity Lutheran (Stutheit) cemetery, Johnson South of Johnson, NE.

Herman Friedrich Beckman, son of Wilhelm and Christine Beckman, was born Oct. 18, 1888 in Mound township, Phillips county, Kans. On Oct. 25 of the same year he was baptized in the name of the Triune God in the Emmanuel Lutheran church at Stuttgart.

On March 23, 1902 he was confirmed at Emmanuel Lutheran church at which time he promised his faithfulness to God and the church. This promise he kept until death.

On Nov. 27, 1912 he was united in marriage to Erna A. Schulz at Zion Lutheran church. They were blessed with two children. In the spring of 1932, Robert Lamp came to make his home with them.

The first three years of their married life they lived on a farm in Dayton township. In 1916 they moved to their present home west of Phillipsburg.

The deceased had been in failing health since last summer and passed away Wednesday morning, Jan. 7, 1959 in the Memorial hospital at Smith Center. He had reached the age of 70 years, 2 months and 20 days.

Surviving his passing are his wife, Erna; daughters (Erna) Mrs. Edwin Dusin of Phillipsburg and (Gertrude) Mrs. Norman Gehrt of Alma, Kans.; foster son, Robert Lamp of Phillipsburg; brothers, Wilhelms [sic] of Sterling, Neb., and Karl of Phillipsburg; sisters, Mrs. Anna Leseberg of Sterling, Colo., Mrs. Martha White of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Hilda Lucas of Stratton, Colo., and 8 grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Gottfried and Arthur, and one sister Emma Meyer.

Funeral services were held Friday at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran church of Phillipsburg. The Rev. Emil Reinking officiated and burial was made in the church cemetery. Music was contributed by Mrs. Max Porter, Mrs. Paul Hilbrink, Mrs. Lester Navis and Mrs. Donald Jackson, accompanied by Mrs. Bernard Schuster at the organ.

Pallbearers were Harold Beckman, Carl Merklein, Walter Anschutz, Ernest Merklein, Ellsworth Kaiser and Ernest Grau.

Erna A. Beckmann was born on May 26, 1893 at Stuttgart, Kans. She was the daughter of Pastor Johann Traugott Schulz and Anna Marie Friebus. She was baptized in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Belmont [Mound] Township, of Phillips County. After living for a few years in Lehigh, Kans., Mrs. Beckmann returned to Zion Lutheran in 1916 where she was a member until her death. She died on April 17, 1966 at the Phillips County Hospital having reached the age of 72 years, 10 months, and 9 days.

On November 27, 1912, she was married to Herman Friedrich Beckmann. Two daughters and one foster son complete their household.

Mrs. Beckmann was preceded in death by her husband, on January 9, 1959, by her parents, and by two infant brothers.

She is survived by: two daughters; Mrs. Edwin (Erna) Dusin, Phillipsburg, and Mrs. Norman (Gertrude) Gehrt, Alma, Kans[.]; one foster son, Robert Lamp, Phillipsburg; 10 grandchildren; two sisters; Mrs. Ernest Anschutz, Phillipsburg, and Mrs. Ewalk [Ewald] Schmidt, Atalissa, Iowa; three brothers; John T. Schulz, Topeka, Kans.; Edmund Schulz, Pendleton, Ore., and Rudolph Schulz, Minneapolis, Minn., together with many other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Beckmann was a charter member of the Zion Lutheran Ladies Aid.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, April 20 in the Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Victor Andersen officiating. Hymns were sung by Mrs. Douglas Lyon accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Fred Meier. Casketbearers were Ellsworth Kaiser, Harold Beckman, Ernest Merklein, Richard Miller, Walter Anschutz and Ted Friebus. Interment was in the Belmont cemetery.

ALMA -- Gertrude Anna Lydia Gehrt, 80, Alma, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at a Topeka hospital.

She was born June 2, 1921, in Phillips County, the daughter of Herman and Anna Schulz Beckman. She graduated from Phillipsburg High School and attended Topeka Business College. She worked for the Selective Service Board in Topekan the 1940s.

Mrs. Gehrt was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church at McFarland, the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, Lutheran Ladies Aid and other church organizations. She also taught Sunday school, kept church records and translated German historical records for many years. She was secretary for the Aid Association for Lutheran, Branch No. 2801, in McFarland for 25 years.

She also was past president of the Wabaunsee County Historical Society, a 25-year 4-H leader, and a member of the auxiliary to the American Legion Post in Alma, the Alma Area Foundation, Kansas Agri-Women and the Topeka Genealogical Society.

She married Norman Carl Gehrt on April 27, 1947, in Topeka. He died Oct. 22, 1993. Mrs. Gehrt also was preceded in death by a son, Thomas William Gehrt, and a daughter, Rebecca Sue Gehrt.

Survivors include two sons, James L. Gehrt and John F. Gehrt, both of Alma; a daughter, Deborah E. Hart, Gig Harbor, Wash.; a sister, Erna Dusin, Phillipsburg; a brother, Robert Lamp, Phillipsburg; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in McFarland. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Stewart Funeral Home in Alma.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in McFarland, the Wabaunsee County Historical Society or the Lutheran Hour, and sent in care of the funeral home.

SMITH CENTER - Rena Alwina Minnie Beckmann Frieling, daughter of Richard and Anna (Tietjen) Beckmann, was born August 24, 1926 on the family farm near Byron, Nebraska. She was baptized, September 5, 1926 by Paster L.C. Lentz at the St. John Lutheran church in Byron, Nebraska.

Rena was confirmed March 17, 1940 by Pastor A. C. Fleischmann at St. John Lutheran in Athol, Kansas. Rena attended Diamond Ridge Country School and graduated in May 1939. After graduating Rena, was employed by neighboring families in various household positions. During those formative years, Rena developed a love for the outdoors & gardening along with the work ethic needed for success in the farming environment.

On August 18, 1945, Rena was united in marriage to Emil W. Frieling at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Athol, Kansas. This 60 year union was blessed with a son, Gary and a daughter, Gaylinn.

Rena and Emil enjoyed 30 years on the family farm north of Gaylord until designing and building a new home in Smith Center in 1975; which they lived in together for 29 years. Rena loved working in the garden and yard with her flowers along with helping with the farm. You could always count on seeing Rena with a paint brush or weed sprayer in her hand.

Rena had the talent to take something ordinary and apply her signature touch. Flower sack embroidering, house decorating and cooking were some of her many talents. Her love for her children prompted her to keep a detailed diary and many scrapbooks of their upbringing for all to look back upon. Rena and Emil took pleasure in watching the High School activities of their grandchildren.

Rena was active as a member in the Christ Lutheran and St. John’s Lutheran churches. She enjoyed the Bible studies and church activities. Her and Emil made weekly visits to people in the local nursing homes and hospitals.

Rena was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother that demonstrated that hard work is something that all should be proud of.

Rena entered into eternal peace and reunited with Emil on September 14, 2010, at the Smith County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care at the age of 84 years 21 days.

Preceding Rena in death was her husband, Emil Frieling; parents, Richard & Anna Beckmann; sister, Hulda Kirchhoff; brother, Fred Beckmann; Sister-in-Law, Valeta Frieling; Brothers-in-Law, Elmer Frieling, Roland Pohlmann, Eugene Kirchhoff.

She is survived by her son, Gary and wife Brenda; daughter, Gaylinn and husband, Brad Tenkley; Grandchildren: Cory & wife Sherri, Danielle & husband Jon Unruh, Terra & husband Matt Davidson; Great Grandchildren: Brody, Bree & Kaine Frieling; Jaxen & Ryann Unruh & Kinsley Davidson; Sisters: Edna Pohlmann & Blondina Kuhlmann; Brother-in Law: Lavern Kuhlmann; Sisters-in Law: Loretta Beckmann & Tess Frieling.

Funeral services will be held at 10AM Friday September 17, 2010 at the St. John Lutheran Church in rural Athol, KS with Pastor James Germer officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery in Smith Center, KS. Visitation will be held from noon until 5PM at the Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary on Thursday. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the St. John Lutheran Church and can be sent in care of the mortuary.

Rena A Frieling, 84, of Smith Center died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010 at Long Term Care in Smith Center. Rena was preceded in death by her husband, Emil. She is survived by a son, Gary (Brenda) Frieling of Athol; daughter, Gaylinn Tenkley (Brad) of Foot Hill Ranch, Calif.; sisters, Edna Pohlmann of Smith Center and Blondina Kuhlmann of Athol; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Evelyn Norden of Kensington is a cousin. The funeral was Friday morning at the St. John Lutheran Church of Athol. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery at Smith Center.

She is survived by her son, Gary and wife Brenda; daughter, Gaylinn and husband, Brad Tenkley; Grandchildren: Cory & wife Sherri, Danielle & husband Jon Unruh, Terra & husband Matt Davidson; Great Grandchildren: Brody, Bree & Kaine Frieling; Jaxen & Ryann Unruh & Kinsley Davidson; Sisters: Edna Pohlmann & Blondina Kuhlmann; Brother-in Law: Lavern Kuhlmann; Sisters-in Law: Loretta Beckmann & Tess Frieling.

Funeral services will be held at 10AM Friday September 17, 2010 at the St. John Lutheran Church in rural Athol, KS with Pastor James Germer officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery in Smith Center, KS. Visitation will be held from noon until 5PM at the Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary on Thursday. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the St. John Lutheran Church and can be sent in care of the mortuary.

Mrs. Emma Alwina Meyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Beckman, deceased, was born Aug. 5, 1884, in Johnson county, Nebraska. In the year following her birth she came to the Phillipsburg community where her parents had established their residence. In this vicinity she grew to womanhood and on January 15, 1903, became the wife of W. H. Meyer. The couple made their home on a farm and at the time of her death Mrs. Meyer was still living in their country home in the Belmont community. One daughter, Mrs. Henry Grau, was born to their union.

Mrs. Meyer was a member of the Lutheran church in which she had been baptized in early life and later confirmed. As long as health permitted, she was a faithful attendant of Zion Lutheran church in Phillipsburg and belonged to the Ladies' Aid Society of this congregation. She was a faithful wife and homemaker to her husband, who, besides his farming operations, for many years took a more than usual active part in community affairs.

The deceased became ill last November, though previous to this already she had been in poor health at various times. Nevertheless, her sudden departure Saturday evening, May 13, at about 6:00 o'clock came quite unexpectedly. She attained the age of 65 years, 9 months and 8 days.

Besides her loving husband, she leaves to mourn her loss, her daughter, Mrs. Henry Grau of Phillipsburg; four brothers, Wm. K. Beckman, Sterling, Nebr., G. G. Beckman, Orange, Calif., H. F. Beckman and Karl Beckman of Phillipsburg, Kans.; three sisters, Mrs. Ed Leseberg, Sterling, Colo., Mrs. Walter White, Denver, Colo., Mrs. Wm. Lucas, Stratton, Colo., a number of nieces and nephews, together with other more distant relatives and friends. Arthur, preceded her in death.

Asleep in Jesus! Blessed sleep!
From which none ever wakes to weep;
A calm and undisturbed repose,
Unbroken by the last of foes.

Funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran church, Tuesday, May 16, at 2 o'clock, with Rev. George Dierks officiating and interment was in Belmont cemetery with Simmons-Olliff Funeral director in charge.

Pallbearers were Edward Miller, Edwin Meyer, Herbert Hanke, Oscar Hanke, George Miller and Martin Meyer.

The flower bearers were Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Dusin, Mr. and Mrs. Karl Merklein, Mrs. Erna Tietmeyer, Mrs. Eleanor Eisjhar and Dell Lucas.

Leona Stohs, 95, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at Cambridge Place in Marysville.
A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 30, at the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Marysville. Rev. Judy Scott officiated.

Debbie Bruna played the organ while the congregation sang “How Great Thou Art”.

Pallbearers were Allen Jackson, Glenn Behrens, Bill Behrens, Larry Stohs, Bob Stohs and Rick Bailey.

Honorary pallbearers were Mike Jackson, Leonhard Stohs, Jr., Don Stohs, Steve Bailey and Herb Stohs.

Burial was in Marysville City Cemetery.

Leona was born on May 24, 1914, on a farm northeast of Marysville, the daughter of Herman and Martha (Krause) Behrens. She attended grade school at Lily Creek Country School and graduated from Marysville High School in 1932. She attended Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia for two years of normal training and received a life teaching certificate.

Leona taught school in Marshall County from 1934 to 1941 and she taught for 1 year at Hebron, NE. She worked as a substitute postmaster at Herkimer, then becoming the postmaster in May of 1973 and working until October 1992.

She was united in marriage to Arthur Stohs. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded by a son, Ronald D. Stohs; and two brothers, Victor and Glenn Behrens.

Survivors include one daughter, Jean Tichy and husband Norman of DeWitt, Ne; one granddaughter, Amber Carrillo; and two great-grandchildren, Dalton and Laura.

A memorial fund has been established and will be designated by the family at a later time. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.

Dennis Lee Bohling, one of seven children of Emil and Elvera (Volker) Bohling, was born November 2, 1947 in Humboldt, Nebraska. Dennis was baptized November 23, 1947 by Rev. Fruehling, and confirmed October 14, 1962 by Rev. Duerschner, both at Martin Luther Lutheran Church south of Johnson, Nebraska. He attended school in Elk Creek, and graduated from Elk Creek High School in 1966. Dennis also attended Peru State College at Peru, Nebraska.
On March 1, 1968 Dennis enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in Vietnam until being wounded in combat, which led to his honorable discharge for medical reasons on September 29, 1969. Dennis was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in the service of his country.
In July of 1972 Dennis was married to Marietta “Petey” Goos at St. James Lutheran (Long Branch) Church near Humboldt. Their marriage of seven years was blessed with the birth of two daughters, Heather and Melissa.
Dennis worked for a short time at National Crane in Waverly, Nebraska before moving back to Elk Creek and taking positions at Searcey Grain and as a substitute rural mail carrier. He eventually became a permanent mail carrier, and retired in 1997 after 25 years of service with the USPS. After his retirement, Dennis still enjoyed helping his brothers with their farm work when he was able.
After suffering a setback following a second operation on his legs, Dennis passed away at St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center on Friday, December 17, 2010 at the age of 63 years, 1 month, and 15 days. His grandparents and father Emil preceded him in death.
Dennis is survived by his daughters Heather and husband Brad Cooper of Hebron, Melissa “Missy” and husband Dax Boyte of Bennet; grandchildren Hannah and Ashlyn Cooper, Addison and Harrison Boyte; mother Elvera Bohling of Tecumseh; sisters and brothers-in-law Carolyn and Charles Hastings of Doniphan, Lorna and Dan Davison of Lincoln, Ardith and Jerry Labenz of Springfield, MO, LuAnn and Larry Carmine of Tecumseh; brothers and sisters-in-law Larry and Lois of Elk Creek, Mark and Lois of Elk Creek; many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, and many friends.
Funeral services were Monday, December 20, 2010 at St. John Lutheran Church in Tecumseh, officiated by Pastor John Diener. Loretta Kerchal was organist for congregational hymns. Pallbearers were nephews Mike Hastings, Dan Hastings, Jeff Hastings, Todd Bohling, Travis Davison, Matt Davison, Brad Labenz, Brent Carmine, Casey Bohling, and Tyler Bohling. Honorary pallbearers were Mike Wolken, Larry Goracke, Roger Weakland, and Mike Davison. Burial was in Martin Luther Cemetery south of Johnson.

Lucille was one of 3 children born to Alvin and Hattie (Sodman) Burow.
She was baptized May 20, 1923 and confirmed Mar. 16, 1937 at St.James (Long Branch)Lutheran Church
April 25, 1946 Lucille married Wilbert Goos at St.James Lutehran Church. Three daughters were born to this union; Lois, Betty and Marietta. Wilbert and Lucy settled on a farm near Elk Creek to raise their family. Later they moved into Elk Creek where Lucy owned and operated the Village Tavern with her husband for 23 years.
Lucille was along time member of St.James Lutheran church
Due to failing health because of her battle with cancer, Lucille moved to Longs Creek Village in Auburn in Nov. of 2002. It was there that she died at the age of 79 years, 10 months and 12 days. Her parents, husband, brother and infant sister preceded her in death.
Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Larry Bohling, Betty and Glen Meyer, and Marietta (Petey) and Fred Pooch. 7 grandchildren one great granddaughter.
Funeral services were held March 6 at St.James (Long Branch) Lutheran church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

She attended country schools and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1936. She received her teaching certificate from Fort Hays College and taught at Chalk Mound and Mount Ayre county schools.

In 1942 she was married to Charles M. Shields. They had two sons, Jerry Charles and Larry Joe. Doris was a homemaker, sold Avon products, and worked as a secretary at Lebanon High School. In 1962, she and Charlie purchased the Adams’ Clothing Company and operated the store for 25 years.

Doris was an active member of the United Methodist Church. She dearly loved her grandchildren and one of her greatest joys was their summer visits. She was full of kindness for others and will be sadly missed by her family and many friends.

She was preceded by her parents, her sister Deloise, her brother Jerald, sisters-in-law, and her loving husband.

She is survived by her sons, Jerry and wife Christine of Overland Park, KS and Larry of Lebanon, KS and two grandsons, Benjamin and Jonathan.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday May 19, 2010 at the Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary with Pastor Laura Fricker officiating.

Visitation will be from one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the mortuary.

The family requests memorial contributions be given to Smith County Long Term Care and can be sent in care of the mortuary.

Gerhardt John (Max) Gemaehlich

Funeral services for G.J. (Max) Gemaehlich, 71, who died here Friday, May
26, were held Tuesday, May 30 at the Immanuel Lutheran church with the
Rev. Norman Betke officiating.

Gerhardt John Gemaehlich was born December 31, 1906 in Kensington, Kansas,
the son of George and Emilie (Bechmann) Gemaehlich. He was baptized
January 4, 1907 at St. John's Lutheran church, Kensington by the Rev. Hainke.

He grew up in the country near Athol, Kansas, and attended rural school
there, and he was confirmed by the Rev. Mueller at St. John's Lutheran church
in Athol June 19, 1921.

Having relatives in this area, he moved to Iowa as a young man seeking
employment here. While here he met and married Irma Bublitz at Emmanuel
Lutheran church of Grafton February 3, 1929 with the Rev. C. Landdeck
officiating. Four children were born to them.

The Gemaehlichs made their home at Popejoy then moved to Kansas and southern
Nebraska, finally coming to Iowa in February of 1938 and to St. Ansgar in
October of 1941 where Max was employed as mechanic for the L. R. Falk
Construction Company for 31 years, retiring in 1972.

They became members of Immanuel Lutheran church, St. Ansgar, in 1941 and
Max remained a member throughout his lifetime. He was also a member of
the Voter's Assembly.

Mr. Gemaehlich served his community as a volunteer fireman for 14 years,
constructing the first 'tank wagon' for the firemen. He served as a deputy
sheriff for a dozen or more years.

He is survived by his wife, Irma; two daughters: Mrs. Lawrence (Janet) Walk,
Lyle; Mrs. Lee (Margaret) Cowell of St. Ansgar; two sons: Duane of Cedar
Rapids and Leon of Charles City; 18 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren;
13 great grandchildren; two brothers, Hardy of Phillipsburg, Kansas; and
Louis of Smith Center, Kansas; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Bottin of Wenatchee,
Washington. And Mrs. Ed (Hilda) Schultz of Pendleton, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Lydia.

Burial was in the St. Ansgar cemetery with Rev. Betke in charge of committal
services.

William "W.B.B." Bernice Bredemeier, 69, died Saturday, October 11, 2008 at his home in Seneca, Kansas.

He was born February 28, 1939, the son of Bernice William and Estella Mussman Bredemeier, in Pawnee City, Nebraska. He attended elementary school at the Roger's School and the Prairie Grove School. He graduated from Bern High School, Bern, Ks, in 1957.

In his earlier years, Bill farmed with his father, worked as a meat cutter in Pawnee City and Seneca Grocery, worked at Winterscheidt Milling Company in Seneca, hauled milk for the Sabetha Creamery, and was an agent for Victory Life Insurance Company.

He attended the World Wide School of Auctioning in Mason City, Iowa and began as a part-time auctioneer in 1965. In 1967, auctioneering became his full time job and passion. He was honored by being assigned the position of Chief Auctioneer for the St. Joseph Stockyards, in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1969. Bill continued his career as Head Auctioneer at the Stockyards for 28 years, and was the owner of Great Plains Livestock Service. Other organizations that Bill was affiliated with include: American Buffalo Association, National Auctioneers Association, Bowman and Bredemeier Dairy Sales Auction Service, John E. Cline Real Estate Auction Service Business, Manhattan Commission Company, and South Coffeyville Stockyards. Bill traveled the country conducting Purebred Cattle Auctions in 30 states and even a few in Canada. He had designed and founded the American Buffalo's Gold Trophy Sale in 1979 and had appeared in five World Champion Livestock Contests. He orchestrated and auctioneered the Great Plains Buffalo Spring Classic in Beatrice, Nebraska in the 90's.

Mr. Bredemeier held numerous other jobs in the past including raising registered Simmental and registered Shorthorn cattle, driving a bus for Nemaha Valley Schools, and most recently was working as a driver for Rail Safe, and had his real estate license.

He volunteered many hours to 4-H as an auctioneer, and was a past Grand Marshall of the Nemaha County Fair parade. He was also an auctioneer at the yearly Ducks Unlimited Auction. He was a member of the Friedens United Church of Christ and served as President of the church board and as a lay minister.

Bill was a bowler for a few years, he liked to fish, he enjoyed singing, and he was always happy to go to a sporting event including volleyball, football, and basketball. In his life he was able to see Mount Rushmore, the Bad Lands, Custer State Park, Chimney Rock, Fort Cody, and most recently Yellowstone National Park. He enjoyed a good meal and could tell you the best restaurant in any town for any meal you desired.

Bill was married to Sharon K. Darnell at the Nazarene Church in Waldron, Arkansas on April 5, 1970.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon of the home; two sons, William R. Bredemeier, Seneca and Kevin Caskey, Glenpool , Oklahoma ; three daughters, Virginia Skoch, Hastings , Nebraska , Patricia Ehrsam, Seneca, and Jonna Johnson, Topeka ; a brother, Ronald Bredemeier, Pawnee City , Nebraska ; a sister, Betty Wenzl, Vermillion; thirteen grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 14 at 11:00 at the Friedens United Church of Christ, Bern . Pastor Ken Tubbesing will preside. Burial will be in Friedens Cemetery.

One day as I was going over the land records of Dover Twp., which had been in Michigan until 1835, and then claimed by Lucas Co., 0. until Feb. 1850 I noticed that WILLIAM GAY, an early land owner, had died about the year 1840, and we have no will for-him, as our records do not begin until 1864, due to a fire on the night of July 14-15, 1864 of the old Court House, located at Ottokee, in Dover Twp. The Toledo, 0. main Library has the 1850, 1870, 1880 U.S. Census of this county, which would be most helpful in adding to the family records of the COSS and GAY families.

WILLIAM GAY must have been ill, as he made plans to deed a plot of land to his older children before his death. From our deed records, I am able to pick up the names of his children. Some of them remained in our county and some of them moved away and I cannot find records for them in our county.

WILLIAM GAY and his family are mentioned in the "ATLAS of the WORLD" A copy is in Toledo main Lucas Co. Library and in our Wauseon Library under Dover Twp., as follows, page 20:

WILLIAM GAY, SR. and his wife, SALLY, were both born in N.Y. State. They settled in Fulton Co., 0. about 1839. Wli. GAY died in late 1840 and his wife died in 1867. He was a farmer, and the post office was Tedrow. WILLIAM GAY was b in 1778 and his wife in 1785. (They were married possibly about 1803 in N.Y. State.)

MRS JAMES CURREY, FORMER TEACHER, DIED JANUARY 18

Memorial services for Bertha Faye Currey, who died Jan. 18, 1966, were held from Simmons Chapel in Kensington, Kansas, Friday, Jan 21 at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Franklin Witter officiating. Interment was in Cedar cemetery.

Music was furnished by Marjorie Meyer and Lorene Witter, accompanied by Gladys Davis. Honorary pallbearers were J. S. Wagner, Raymond Thomm, Olin Snair, Raymond Hagman and Wilson Nonamaker. Active bearers were George Oliva, Lawrence Reynolds, Alvin Grauerholz, Paul Claudell, Rex Bierman and Glen McCormick.

Obituary: Bertha Faye, only daughter of Ernest L. and Rose Smith, was born in Smith County near Kensington, Kansas, December 8, 1908, and passed away suddenly on January 18, 1966 at the age of 57 years 1 month and 10 days. Her death was attributed to a coronary attack.

She attended Fort Hays State College and Boulder University in preparation for her teaching career, which she followed for nearly 18 years.

On December 30, 1945, she was united in marriage to James H. Currey. They established their home on the Currey farm near Claudell and lived there their entire married life. To this union was born one daughter, Diana June.

Bertha united with the First Christian church in Kensington at an early age and was a teacher in Sunday school for a number of years. She was a Past Worthy Matron of Athena Chapter 440 Order of the Eastern Star, Kensington. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Board of Education of Kensington schools, a position she had held for a number of years. She was also a member of the 4-C unit in the community where she resided.

Bertha was one of high ideals and advocated everything that was noble and good in the community, and was always concerned with the interest of her family and home, She took great pride in her flowers, yard and garden.

She is survived by her husband, James, and Daughter Diana of the home; two brothers, Clarence A and Jess A. Smith, Kensington and several nieces and nephews, many close relatives and a host of friends.

CURREY, BERTHA FAYE SMITH (MRS. JAMES)

FRIDAY SERVICES FOR MRS JAMES CURREY

Mrs. James Currey, the former Bertha Faye Smith, 57, of the Claudell vicinity, died unexpectedly Tuesday night, apparently from a coronary attack. The Curreys were on their way to Kensington to attend the basketball tournament. She was driving. Suddenly she complained about a pain in her chest and stopped the car. Mr. Currey took over the wheel and drove to Kensington where she was dead on arrival at the office of Dr. B. Hartman.

Mrs. Currey, a former teacher, was a member of the school board at Kensington. She and Mr. Currey where the parents of one daughter Diane of the home.

Memorial services will be held tomorrow (Friday) from Simmons chapel in Kensington at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Cedar.

Funeral services for Annie Gutzman, 87, were held at the Jones Funeral Home in Salmon on 17 March 1962 with Rev. Don I. Smith of the Salmon Methodist Church officiating. Mrs. Gutzman passed away on 14 March 1962 in Salmon, Idaho. She was born in Montana on 9 April 1874, the daughter of David and Sarah Miller. She spent her early life in Montana and in 1893 was married to John Gutzman in Woodsville, Montana, The couple made their home there for three years. In 1897 the family came to Lemhi County and settled on the Ten Mile Ranch. They raised their family there and remained there until Mr. Gitzman passed away in 1925. Mrs. Gutzman has made her home in Salmon since that time. Mr. and Mrs. Gutzman had 11 children and also raised a nephew from infancy. Survivors are sons, Paul, Johnny, and Lester all of Salmon, Isaac of Las Vegas, Wilson of Gallup, New Mexico, and Lewis of Oregon; daughters, Myrtle Darst of Ellensburg, Washington and Lavilla Fern of Mackay; a nephew, Everett Miller; also 31 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Isaac Miller of San Francisco, California. Three children preceded her in death, Ernest, James and Thelma. Pallbearers were Eddie Waldal, Merle Hoffman, John Reddington, Wesley McLaughlin, C.E. Stroud and Horace Hyde. Burial took place in the family plot in The Salmon Cemetery.

Lisa Ratliff and Neal Dettmer of Arlington, Virginia, were joined in marriage at the St. John Lutheran Church in Kensington Saturday afternoon, Sept. 19. The reception was at the Kensington American Legion Hall. Parents of the couple are Lyle and Virgie Ratliff and Brian and Linda Dettmer, all of Kensington.

Both Lisa and Neal are graduates of West Smith County High School. Lisa graduated from Washburn University with a Bachelor's degree in Nursing. She is employed by Georgetown Unviersity Hospital in Washington, D.C. as a registered nurse in the Medical Intensive Care Unit.

Neal graduated from Kansas State University in Manhattan with a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He is employed by Lockheed Martin as a systems engineer in Springfield, VA.

After a honeymoon in Italy, the couple is at home in Arlington, VA.

KENSINGTON – Daisy Mae Donovan, age 91, passed away on Sunday March 28, 2010 at Prairie Haven Nursing Center in Kensington, KS. She was a retired teacher.

Daisy was born the daughter of Vernon & Mary (Grimes) Belcher on December 26, 1918 in Hinton, OK.

Survivors include a daughter Patricia (Donald) Bienhoff of Kensington, KS; 2 grandchildren; 4 Great Grandchildren; 1 Great Great Granddaughter; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Lester Hecht, age 82, of Gillette, Wyo., were held at 10 a.m. at the Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, with the Rev. Mark Jervis of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Sterling at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 14. Visitation was held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11 at the funeral home in Gillette.

Lester died Thursday, Sept. 8 at Campbell County Memorial Hospital of natural causes. Lester Calvin Hecht was born on Nov. 28, 1922 the son of David and Eliza (Munday) Hecht in Coldwater, Kan.In 1925 Les moved with his family to Sterling were he was raised and educated. Upon finishing his schooling Les married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Howell, on Dec. 31, 1942, in Sidney, Neb. The couple started their family in Sterling. On March 19, 1943, Les enlisted in the Army Air Force serving during WWII, stationed in London. He was proud that he served his country, but modest about the medals he had earned.

Following his honorable discharge Les returned to Sterling and in 1968 the family moved to Wyoming. His work for the Permian Corporation brought him to Gillette, Wyo. His career there started out as a night mechanic and 35 years later he retired as a regional superintendent in 1985. Les was a talented mechanic, training several employees and building three trucks from the ground up. He enjoyed fishing and hunting in the mountains and he also enjoyed riding ATV's well into his 70s.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Shirley, whom he treated like a queen; two daughters: Janice Howlett, who remembers him for his love for his grandkids, Sharon Draper, who admires his attention to detail and quality work, and one son, Ron Hecht and his wife Shirley, who appreciate him always being there for his family, all of Gillette; and one sister, Loma Englehaupt of Sterling. Les is also survived by his 12 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, two brothers and one son-in-law. A memorial has been established in Lester's name to benefit the Campbell County Healthcare Foundation to build a Hospice House. Just a quick note to let you know we don't care that our info is in your website, just would like it to be right. I checked and it still had my birthyear as 1958 instead of 1956. I don't know how difficult it is to change. Our son Jeremy Yaussi and his family live in Topeka too, on Stafford. I was working on a quick list of other family history and got sidetracked and thought I'd let you know that no one was mad about being listed. I need to get some spelling on some of it. It would be interesting to know who was in the CIA or associated with it. Arthur always thought someone in his family could be associated with it, but never was confirmed. It was just a hunch or feeling of some. Arthur also wanted to let you know that you don't have Ilene Oliver listed on Carl Smith's family. She is the youngest sister and lives in Hiawatha on Cherokee Street if you ever get back to town.

They live 6 miles south of Hiawatha on the Baker/Powhattan road. west 2 miles to railroad tracks. north side of road. Alan lives 1 mile south of tracks and west 1/4 on south side. Obituary for Chester Sodman Stutheit
Chester Sodman Stutheit, son of Herman J. & Sadie(Sodman) Stutheit, was born on a farm south of Johnson, NE. on Feb. 22, 1913. He was one of four children.
He received his education at the Greenfield rural school.
after completing his schooling he started farming.
Oct. 16, 1934 he was united in marriage to Alma A. Oestmann, they were married at the Martin Luther Church.
After their marriage they moved to a farm next to his parents farm. Here they lived until his parents from farming. He lived his entire life on the same section.
Two children were born to this union, Dolores and Herman.
Chester was baptized and confirmed at the St. Paul (Stutheit)Lutheran Church. eight years ago they transfered their membership to Martin Luther(Timber Creek)Church.
He taught in the Sunday School, first in the Stutheit Church and the past five years in Martin Luther Church.
He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, who died in infancy.
Surviving are his wife, Alma, daughter Dolores, Mrs. Lorraine Hahn of Lincoln, NE. and son, Herman, and his wife Jeannette (Bohling). 3 grandchildren,Ramona, Pamela and Barbara Hahn. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman J. Stutheit of Johnson, NE. and one sister, Alvera,(Mrs. Henry)Rogge Jr. of Johnson, NE.
Chester suffered a heart attack Nov. 11 at which time he was taken to Tecumseh Hospital, returned home where he had a second attack and passed away Sunday morning, Nov. 22, 1959. He was 46 years and 9 months of age.

He was baptized December 7, 1924 by Rev. H. Mueller and confirmed April 10, 1938 by Rev. A.C. Fleishman at the St. John Lutheran Church, Athol, KS, where he remained an active member until his death.

LaVern attended the Sunny Side Grade School and Athol High School, graduating in 1942.

On August 22, 1948, LaVern was united in marriage to Blondina Beckmann at the St. John Lutheran church by Rev. George Dirks. They were married for 62 years and to this union they were blessed with 4 children, Sandra, Jerrel, Mark and Kent.

LaVern enjoyed farming and watching the crops grow. He had a great love of the land and had pride in his Chevy pick ups and John Deere tractors. In later years he enjoyed coffee at the COOP and sitting by the stove in Marks shop.

He faithfully attended worship at St. John Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday School, was a deacon, Council Treasurer and sung in the Church choir for a number of years.

LaVern was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Kent, his brother Bernard and brother-in-laws Roland Pohlmann, Fred Beckmann, Emil Frieling and Eugene Kirchoff and sister-in-laws Hulda Kirchoff and Rena Frieling.

Survivors include his wife Blondina, daughter Sandra and husband Mick Fowler of Grand Island, NE, son Jerrel and wife Carol of St. Peters, MO, and son Mark of Athol; grandchildren, Grant and Mariette Benker of Omaha, NE, Joshua Benker of Denver, CO and Braden Kuhlmann of Lufkin, TX; great grandchildren, Katelynn (who he always had a tootsie roll for), and Gage Benker; sister Vanora and husband Leland Lehmann and sister-in-laws Alvina Kuhlmann and Edna Pohlmann of Smith Center and Loretta Beckmann of Gaylord.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Saturday April 9, 2011 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Athol, KS with Jim Germer PMA officiating.

Burial will follow in the St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 PM until 8 PM Friday April 8, 2011 at the Mortuary.

The family requests memorial contributions be given to The St. John Lutheran Church and can be sent in care of the mortuary.

Irma Mary Gemaehlich, daughter of Otto H. and Babetta (Gutmann) Bublitz was born in Grafton, Iowa, on November 5, 1909. She was baptized November 28, 1909 by the Rev. John Landdeck. She was confirmed on April 5, 1925 by the Rev. C. Landdeck. She attended school in the Grafton area through the ninth grade, when she left school to help her parents farm.
On February 3, 1929 she married Gerhardt J. Gemaehlich. Four children were born to them. They resided for a time in southern Nebraska and central Iowa before moving to the St. Ansgar area in 1941.
Mrs. Gemaehlich was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church, a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and an active member in the Mary Circle.
Mrs. Gemaehlich is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Lawrence (Janet) Walk of Lyle, Minnesota, and Mrs. Lee (Margaret) Cowell of St. Ansgar; by two sons: Duane of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Leon of Charles City, Iowa; by 18 grandchildren, three step grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; by two sisters: Mrs. Jack (Pearl) Miles of Osage, Iowa, and Adeline Kroneman of Mason City, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her infant brother, Rheinhold; two sisters, Clara Bublitz and Mrs. Linda Clausen; her parents and her husband, Gerhardt.
Funeral services were held June 15 at the Immanuel Lutheran church in St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Norman Betke officiating.
Burial was in the St. Ansgar cemetery.

Last Rites in Oregon for J. Gemaehlich, 76

OSAGE, IOWA — The Rev. J. Gemaehlich, who served as pastor of St. John's Lutheran church west of Osage and East of Grafton during 1919-1937, died Thursday afternoon at his home at Medford, Ore., having been in failing health for the past 3 years. His son, Andrew, of Mitchell left for the funeral rites. Burial was to be at Medford.

Born February 25, 1871, Hamburg, Germany, where as a young man he took all of his theological training, coming to Athol, Kansas, in 1891 to serve his first pastorate.

In 1893 he was married to Mathilda Beckmann of Kensington, Kans. The couple celebrated its golden wedding anniversary at their last pastorate at Russell, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife, nine children, Andrew, Mitchell; Simon, Dennison, Texas; Emil, Clinton, Oklahoma: John, Central Point, Oregon; Rudolph, St. Ansgar; Mrs. Ralph Lorenz, Osage; Berthold, Portland, Oregon, Mrs. Theodore Trautmann, and Mrs. Edward Rupp, both of Medford, Oregon.

Former Pastor at Osage Will Mark 50th Anniversary

OSAGE, IOWA — Rev. J. Gemaehlich, who for 12 years was pastor of the Rock Creek Lutheran church, in Mitchell county, Iowa, will observe the fiftieth year of his ministry Wednesday at Russell, Kansas, where he has had a pastorate since leaving Osage in 1927.

His daughter, Mrs. Ralph Lorenz, and her daughter, Lois; his son, Andrew Gemaehlich, and family, of Osage; another son, Rudolph Gemaehlich, and family, St. Ansgar, left Sunday to be present at the observance.

Rev. Mr. Gemaehlich commenced his ministry at Smith Center, Kansas, then for a number of years was at various pastorates in Oklahoma, and came from that state to this community.

The other children of Rev. and Mrs. Gemaehlich are: John, Bert, and Mrs. Hulda Trautmann, all of Medford, Ore.; Agnes, of Great Bend, Kansas; Simon and Amil, of Bessie, Oklahoma. All, with their families, will be present at the observance.

Oregon rites for Mrs. Trautmann, murder victim

OSAGE, IOWA — Funeral services will be held in Portland, Oregon, Friday and in Medford, Oregon, Monday, for Mrs. Hulda Trautmann, 49. Burial will be in Medford.

Mrs. Trautmann, who had been a parish worker for the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church the last year, was killed Monday night by a 21-year-old man while taking a church census.

Donald Pribbenow, being held by Vancouver police, said he, "bludgeoned and stabbed the woman while she was talking religion to me." He offered no further explanation.

Born in Bessie, Oklahoma, August 31, 1911, she was the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. John Gemaehlich. Her father served as pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, east of Grafton, from 1920 to 1926. She was married to Theodore Trautmann in Russell, Kan., in 1935. They lived in Everett, Wash., until his death five years ago, when she moved lo Portland, Ore.

Surviving are her mother, Mathilda Gemaehlich, Medford, Oregon; two sons, Donald, at home; Paul, a college student in Nebraska; six brothers, John Gemaehlich, Medford; Berthold, Los Angeles; Simon, Dennison, Texas; Emil, Cordell, Oklahoma; R. A. [Rudolph] Gemaehlich and Andrew, Osage; two sisters, Mrs. Ed (Agnes) Rupp, Medford; Mrs. Ralph (Hattie) Lorenz, Osage.

OSAGE, IOWA -- Services for Mrs. Eddie Rupp, 60, a former Osage resident who died Wednesday at Ashland, Oregon, are pending and will be conducted in Oregon. She died of cancer.

She is survived by her husband and four children of Oregon; six brothers including Andrew and Rudolph Gemaehlich, both of Osage; and one sister, Mrs. Ralph Lorenz of Osage.

She worked at the Johnson County Bank in Tecumseh. later working at Eggers Brothers south of Johnson and Sid's Auto Parts in Tecumseh.
She married July 12, 1997 to Wayne gerdes in Coryell Park near Brock, NE. This union brought together her children, Trisha, Tonya, Brian, Shari, and Ashley with his children Jeremy, Christopher, Philip, Nathaniel, Michelle and Randall. Cheryl and Wayne made their home in Johnson, NE. and in 1998 purchased the Johnson Quik Stop.
Cheryl was diagnosed with cancer. She passed away at her home at the age of 57 years and 27 days.
She was preceded in death by her father Henry Rieken, grandson Damian Gerdes, and grandparents Fredrick and Velma Piper and Rieke and Tina Rieken. Survived by children, Trisha(Joel) Kelsay; Tonya (Chris)Krmaer, Brian Gerdes, Shari (Gabe)Berglund; Ashley Caspers; Jeremy (Jana) Gerdes; Chrisopher (Dana)Gerdes; Philip (Crystal) Gerdes; Nathaniel (Alecia) Gerdes; Michelle (Douglas) Hoff; Randall Gerdes and Fieanc'ee Rachelle; 19 grandchildren, mother vera Rieken, brother Criag (Gina) Rieken.

Frederich was the 3rd child of Carolina Dorthea Friedericka (Beckmann) and William A. Goos. born on a farm near Tecumseh, NE. one of 10 children.He was baptized June 19, 1918 at St.John's Lutheran Church in Tecumseh, NE. and confirmed Mar. 25, 1934 at St. Paul (Stutheit)Lutheran church rural Auburn, Ne. He attended school at St.Peter's Lutheran Church at Elk Creek, Ne. Later he and wife
lived on the home place of his parents. He married June 12, 1941, St. James Lutheran Church, rural Humboldt, Nemaha, NE. to Edna Bertha Emilie Volker.
They had 2 children, Delta Frieda Caroline Goos and Roger Frederich Goos.
He entered the Army in February of 1941 and for health reasons was honorably discharged in Mar. of 1941.
Fred farmed the family farm. including a dairy operations for six years.
Fred belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church in Auburn, NE. He was also a member of the Four States Coon Huntiners Associating. and served as President for that organization. He raised great coon dogs.
He passed away at the St.Elizabeths Regional Medical Center in Lincoln, NE. at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 12 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Arthur, Theodore, Wilbert and Herbert; and tow infant great grandchildren.
Surviving were his wife Edna, daughter and son in law Delta and Robert Boden; son and daughter in law, Roger and Sondra Goos. 9 grandchildren 22 great grandchildren, sisters Josephine Schmiegelow of Little Rock, AR.Olga and husband Cliffor Hantak, Cleveland, OH. Adeline and husband Melvin Kuhlmann, McCook, NE. Bernita Heidzig of Auburn. brother Walter and wife Joy Goos of Holdrege, NE.

Herbert Waldemar Goos was the 8th child of Carolina D.F. Beckmann and William A. Goos.
Herbert was baptized Oct. 31, 1926 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, rural Elk Creek,Ne. and confirmed at St. paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Humbolt, Ne.
He was a farmer north of Humboldt, NE.
He married Nov. 17, 1949, St. James Lutheran Church, Humboldt, Nemaha, NE. to Deloma Alma Lena Stutheit. They divorced and he remarried to on April 15, 1983 he married Carol Shrauger Collins. Herbert and Deloma had 2 children, Lavern Gary and Connie Jean Goos.He also had 3 grandchildren and one great Grandchild. A brother Fred, and wife Edna, Walter and wife Joy, four siters, Josephine Schmiegelow, Olga and husband Cliff Hantak, Adeline and husband Melvin Kuhlmann, and Bernitta Heidzig. a sister in law Lucille Goos.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Theodore, Arthur and Wilbert.
Herbert died at the age of 68 years, seven months and seven days.

Melvin Fredrick Kuhlmann, 89, died Thursday (Feb. 2, 2006) at Community Hospital of McCook.

He was born July 19, 1916, near Elk Creek, the son of Fred L. and Amelia (Volker) Kuhlmann. He attended school and graduated from "The Old Stone School" in rural Nemaha County. He was reared on the family farm, helping his parents until he was 21-years-old.

He married Adeline Fredricka Goos on Nov. 21, 1940. Soon after their wedding they began to sell Wear-Ever Aluminum Cookware, until World War II, when he worked in the Bomber Plant at Mead.

Melvin worked, for a time, for Earl May Seed Co. in Auburn and later moved to Cook to embark on several years of farming. After a devastating tornado in 1948, they moved to Auburn, where he formed a partnership with his nephew in the contracting business. Due to health issues, he had to quit the carpenter business and started selling for Farm Bureau Insurance Company.

After several successful years, but missing self-employment, he and Adeline moved to McCook in 1959 to purchase the Ranch Motel and Steakhouse, where they enjoyed much success. Following the death of their business partner, Harry S. Strunk in 1961, they sold that business and Mel went to work selling for Farmcraft Feeds. He later partnered with his sons in the Service Station business, and was also successful in both the Amway and Amzoil businesses.

He and Adeline were lifelong members in the Lutheran Church and were active in numerous business and social groups.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred L. Kuhlmann, and three brothers, Hubert, Theodore and Edwin.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Adeline; his children, Robert (and Verleen) Kuhlmann of Kearney, Sharon (and David) Huegel of McCook and Charles (and Teresa) of McCook; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his sister, Elta Meyer of Lincoln; sister-in-law, Anna May Kulhmann of Humboldt; and many family and friends.

Services will be Monday, 10:30 a.m., at the Peace Lutheran Church in McCook with the Rev. Randy Wahl officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.

Memorials can be given in his name and friends may call at Herrmann Funeral Home, 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Sunday, 1-6 p.m.
