Stories/Jokes
From the Smith County Pioneer

Now that I am older, here are some of the things that I have discovered:

- I stared with nothing and still have most of it left.
- I finally got my head together, now my body is falling apart.
- Funny, I don't remember being absent minded.
- It is easier to get older than it is to get wiser.
- If God had wanted me to touch my toes, He would have put them on my knees.

Optimist Program - May 4, 2012.

Captain Angela McCardie, from the Shawnee County Department of Corrections was introduced by Ted Heim. He stood in for Ron Brown, who was attending another meeting. She discussed some of the issues facing the Detention Center and the problems of placing runaways with violent offenders. There has been an increase in female sent to the Detention Center, mostly runaways. She also mention the length of time some are held, just waiting for court action/appeals. The Detention Center has often housed juveniles from other counties, on contract, but the Center is now operating at near-capacity.

Sorry, there is no information on the big winners for the drawings that week.

   “ Safety – City Crime - Neighborhoods”

May 11, 2012                      Vol. 1  No. 27

SIX YEARS…is how long Ron Miller has been Chief of Police for the City of Topeka.  He was our guest speaker and gave a most insightful talk about Topeka and crime. He touched on three main topics: (1) Public Safety as job ONE.  Effective use of the police and the departments resources; (2) Crime in Topeka, currently we are about even with last years stats. Theft being the big item – shoplifting, huge problem in Topeka, auto theft is another biggie and (3) he is focused on higher police visibility in neighborhoods. He also gave out a HUGE thank you and ‘atta boy’ to our own Ron Brown for his excellent work with the schools in Topeka. (Did you notice how TALL that Chief Dude is!?)

IN KEEPING WITH OUR…crime fighters theme for May, our speaker this Friday is newly minted Shawnee County Sheriff Jones. Weather man says all week its suppose to be OUTSTANDING weather so plan on spending this Friday with us at the Top of The Tower.

8:15 A of M…this Friday morning at Loman Hills. Anyone who can help Rod, it would be greatly appreciated.

LITTLE OLD ME…won the ticket and badge number draw and Ron Brown took home the candy for the attendance list number.
